High Risk Pregnancy (Maternal Fetal Medicine)
Beth Israel is staffed by experts in perinatology and is equipped with advanced technologies that facilitate difficult diagnoses and help in monitoring high-risk pregnancies. These may include mothers who are older; who have a pre-existing medical condition or a history of obstetrical complications; or who develop a problem in their current pregnancy, such as hypertension or diabetes.
The patient and physician work together to develop an appropriate and comprehensive plan of management. We also offer genetic counseling and testing.
Since pregnancy is a process, risk assessment must be ongoing. Specialists in high-risk pregnancies are always available to help, whether in the antepartum period or during labor and delivery. We always give the most appropriate medical care while trying to normalize the process as much as possible for the mother.
The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Beth Israel treats newborns with special needs such as premature babies and infants with conditions such as:
- Respiratory distress
- Surgical problems
- Birth defects
As soon as an infant is admitted to the NICU, his/her care is directly supervised by a neonatologist – a pediatrician with specialized and advanced training in the care of premature and ill newborns. Our level III NICU is equipped to handle all medical emergencies.
